Art and Beauty Tuesday--Basilica in Washington DC

This is a portion of a mosaic in the Lithuanian chapel at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.  These pine branches and pine cones surround the arched doorway to the chapel and were chosen because Siluva (a town, church and icon of Our Lady in Lithuania) means "pine cone.)

The blues and greens blend beautifully and the triangular pine cones are reminiscent of the Trinity.

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
