b/c i wasn't raised catholic and have never been into ccm, i've always wondered about catholics who are into ccm, b/c so many of those artists are from the evangelical & fundamentalist side of the faith and adhere to a lot of anti-catholic ideas. i know that calvary chapel has been a huge influence on ccm, and i used to go to a cc, and i've never heard such vehement anti-catholic ranting as i did there. what's your take?

That's actually a very good point. I think one's faith has to be fairly solid to listen to non-Catholic music. If doing so weakens your faith, I would definitely stay away from it. But, sometimes I end up liking Christian music. I wish there was a Catholic ccm.

I think you can be a catholic and still listen to a good majority of ccm bands. Jars of Clay, tobymac and Nichole Nordeman say nothing at all offensive to the Catholic faith, so those are three I'd really recommend!

still, if you sat down and had conversations with those artits, you might find that they have some pretty harsh views toward the expression of the christian faith you have chosen. but, i don't like ccm at all, anyways. i find it to be very kitsch and i don't find the idea of labelling music as "christian" and "secular" comfortable. bono once said that he knew God existed when he heard miles davis. music is a gift, we don't need to make it black & white and huddle in the corner and cause further rifting with the rest of the world.

music labels help people find music they are interested in, so why not?

Well, if music not labeled as Christian would nevertheless have some Christian values, then maybe we would get somewhere.

There are "Christian" music artists that I don't like, just like any other kind of music. You have to pick and choose based on your tastes and in this case, faith.

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
