Art & Beauty Tuesday--Hildegard of Bingen

Holy Spirit, giving life to all life, moving all creatures, root of all things, washing them clean, wiping out their mistakes, healing their wounds, you are our true life: luminous, wonderful, awakening the heart from its ancient sleep. ~ Hildegard of Bingen

This amazing work, Cultivating the Cosmic Tree was done by St. Hildegard of Bingen, a new Doctor of the Church.

The gold in the background is traditionally used to indicate the presence of divinity.

We see the universe surrounded by the Fire of God's love.  Various animals are seen forcefully blowing air beyond the "waters above the heavens" to reach the creation on the earth.

We see people interacting with their world--harvesting and existing among the seasons.

Hildegard was an herbalist, as well as poet, composer, preacher and Benedictine nun.  Far from being fearful of knowledge and of the science of her day, she embraced it, and used all her gifts for the glory of God.

I am a big Hildegard fan. She has much to teach us today, and it is so great that the Holy Father has given her to us as both Saint and Doctor.

Dymphna's favorite quotes

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
