Our Lady of Sorrows

Stabat mater dolorosa
iuxta Crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last.

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The popular image of Our Lady of Sorrows is taken from the biblical verse,

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce.
Luke 2:35

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
