Threat to Freedom of Religion Continues

As with many things the current U.S. administration does, this latest threat to the freedom of religion is one that flies under the radar.  It is not nearly as serious as what may be going on in other countries, but taken as a whole with the unkept promise to have a conscience clause in the healthcare bill, as well as the many statements  disrespectful to religion as a whole and Catholicism in particular by members of the Obama White House, this is disturbing.

CNS News reports that the State Department has removed sections that cover religious freedom from the Country Reports on Human Rights, referring readers instead to the 2010 International Religious Freedom Report, which, by definition is out of date.

This apparent attempt to put religious freedom itself under the radar of more and more Americans is a shocking neglect of one the basic rights on which this country was founded--which the current administration seems to have less and less respect for--and a head-in-the-sand approach to the disturbingly overt religious persecution that goes on overseas.

The United States should, as it has done in the past 200+ years, serve as an example and a champion of ALL human rights, all over the world.  It is a sad time that we are becoming, little by little, a country no longer concerned with human rights.

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
