Schlom Lecht Maryam.

In honor of today's Solemnity of the Annunciation, I am posting this chant. This is the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) in Syriac, a dialect of Arabic, the language spoken by Jesus and Mary. The Hail Mary is taken mainly from the angel Gabriel's words to Mary at the Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke.

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
