All Souls's Day

Sunday is the Feast of All Souls where we remember those who have died.

Here is a setting of part of a
requiem--a funeral Mass--by John Rutter. The lyrics (and translation when necessary) are posted under the video.

I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me
blessed are the dead who die in the Lord
for they rest from their labours.
Even so saith the Spirit, for they rest.

Lux aeterna luceat eis Domine
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum:
quia pius es.

Let everlasting light shine on them, O Lord
with your saints for ever:
for you art merciful.

Requiem aeternam
dona eis, Domine;

Eternal rest
grant to them, Oh Lord;

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
