Today's birthdays

Today, Leonard Nimoy, aka Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek, turns 77 and Vicki Lawrence, of the Carol Burnett show, turns 59.

Here's her 1973 number one hit (her only hit) "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia." Still the definitive version, IMO.

As for Nimoy, the YouTube didn't allow embedding of this video, but it is worth clicking and watching. Nimoy explains here: Judaism in Star Trek. Fascinating.

"Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and of Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition. "— Rodney Stark
