What's this called?

Since it's hot today, I thought I would post this picture and ask you all a question.
1. What is this summer treat called?

2. And, where are you from? (I'm trying to test a theory about the regional variations on the name of this yummy treat.)

3. Also, what is your favorite flavor?

We grew up calling them "snowballs". We went to the "snowball stand" when it was hot. The guy was nice and gave us extra syrup. Then my cousins moved down from New York and didn't know what we were talking about. We told them they would like it and just to come with us. When we walked to the neighborhood "snowball stand" they said, "Oh, you mean snowCONES." We were like, "What the heck is a snow cone." And then some people say Icees, but I think more of a Slurpee from 7-11 when I hear that. What do YOU call them?

Btw, when I was a kid my favorite was chocolate with marshmallow. Now I prefer cherry or watermelon.

Yep, I called them snowballs too. (Oh, you forgot to tell where you were from, although I know that, LOL!)

When ds was small, we had a snowball stand right down the street. Mmmmmm! I became fond of Egg Custard flavor. DH wouldn't even try it. Just thinking "egg custard" and "snow ball" in the same sentence, was enough to chase him off the idea! I think cherry is his favorite.

Ok, I'm from bawlmore, hon! My sister, Trisha, loved egg custard. Rootbeer is my dh's favorite and a good backup for me as well.

I realized with horror that *I* didn't say where I was from.

So, we have 2 votes for "snowball"--BOTH from Baltimore.

Anyone else? I am especially interested in anyone who grew up in another country.

Ok, here's a link to an article detailing the historical significance of snowball making in Baltimore! My kind of doctoral thesis, LOL!

I'm from Oregon and when it's in that shape of cup it's called shaved ice but in a paper cup that is shaped like a cone (pointy on one end) then it's called a snowcone!

Thanks for weighing in, Julia!

I have always seen them in the paper cone as Julia mentioned, and known them as snow cones!
I'm from Australia :)

as for flavours- we certainly dont have the range that you guys do!! egg custard?!?! it sounds great... and interesting! usually we get them from a stand in the first week of uni for free, and we can have "red" or "blue" flavour or both!!

we have slurpees at 7-11 too, though I have a friend who insists on calling them freezies!

so there you are!
God Bless

Thanks, Rachi! I was hoping to hear from someone overseas! Another interesting flavor we have here is "sky blue". We have just about every flavor you can imagine here--and then some!

Snowcone was the first thing that came to my mind, but the cone-shaped cup might make the difference.

I had to find a picture of whateveritis that didn't actually have the words "snow cone" or "sno cone" printed on the cone-shaped cup!

1. A snowball. There was a truck that would come down our street and sell them. In the suburbs, snowball stands are more prevalent . . . except in my county, where snowball stands aren't allowed. >:-(

2. In Maryland, just west of the Monocacy River. Grew up in Bawlamer, though.

3. Cherry or sky-lite (a.k.a. Windshield Washer Fluid).

*Gasp*! Snowball stands aren't allowed?!? What were they thinking?!

1-Called either a slushie or a snow-cone.

2-Utah

3-Cherry-lime.

Staying in Balance said...

Cherry-lime sounds good!

Dairy Queen used to sell them under the name Mr. Misty. Or you could call it a slushy.

Thanks, Angela! When I was growing up, a slushy would be much finer ice--and maybe more syrup too.

I'm from Ohio and we called them sno cones. I think ours only came in red or blue (or red, white and blue) too.

If we were good in Kmart we got a Slushee, which was finer and only came in cherry, as I recall.
