More on immodest dress

Not to belabor the point, but I found a very informative article over at Catholic Exchange. Karen Lynn Ford, the author of the article tells how she went to Disney world 12 years ago dressed provocatively, and a Disney employee asked her to put on a t-shirt over her bikini top because Disney World was a family park. Bravo to that Disney employee!!

These days, in fear of offending people, many who are in a position to educate young women on the appropriate dress for occasions such as work or church functions will not impose anything like a dress code in the places they have authority over.

This is ironic because in many public schools, even as young as elementary age children are under a dress code of sorts, not allowing such things as midriff baring tops or tshirts with offensive slogans on them. Its time for work places and churches to follow suit.

I've heard several priests struggle with delivering messages to their parish's about appropriate dress for church, especially among young/teen girls. My son told me a classic he heard from a Chicago priest at the beginning of summer. He simply told the ladies, "when you dress for church, ask yourself if you want to see an icon of the Mother of God in what you are wearing". I love it!!

Disclaimer: not picking on the ladies, men are equally offensive, just haven't heard such a great line to use on them.

I agree. Priests should begin to emphasize the need for modest dress. Once I heard a priest instruct the congregation not to be talking before mass starts. This was well and good but then he fell short of his priestly duty when he continued to say, "...now I'm not going to go on and on by telling you how to dress for mass"!

Would you want to see an icon of Mary wearing what you are wearing? What a GREAT idea!!! I wish every priest would give that sermon on a regular basis.

The Organist again ... I played for a wedding this afternoon and noticed many low-cut, revealing dresses and outfits. Our PP never says a word about dress at Mass and other church functions, and it's pretty sad to see how some people dress coming into the Presence of God. Makes me wonder if they even believe in the Real Presence any more. The idea of one's "Sunday best" seems to have gone the way of the dodo.

Oops ... sorry for the double post!

I honestly think that revealing clothing is so much a part of most people's "landscapes" that they don't even think twice about what might be appropriate to wear in churh.
